Like most of America, I was deeply saddened and angered by the senseless murder of George Floyd. Since his May 25th death, we have seen peaceful protests and unrest throughout the nation and right here at home. These demonstrations are not only about the George Floyd tragedy, but about too many acts of violence committed against Black Americans that have gone without appropriate resolution. These demonstrations are also about addressing systemic racism and historic injustice. The Community Coalition recognizes that to bring about peace, these complex issues must be addressed directly. The Community Coalition has made improving police community relations and addressing race relations main priorities. We believe we have made progress in addressing these issues, but much work remains to be done.
The Champaign County Community Coalition exists to lead in identifying solutions to our community’s most difficult and pressing issues. It is our goal to bring the community together in times of crisis and uncertainty. We must forge a path forward together as this community always strives to do.
We are asking our Community Coalition leadership, partners, and friends to join today’s peaceful protest for George Floyd at 3 p.m. at the Champaign County Courthouse. Wear your Walk as One T-shirts and a mask.
It is imperative that we at the Community Coalition show our support for our community partners at this time.
